Item Description
5x7" vintage matte photo depicts Cuban baseball great Silvio Garcia along w/several unidentified teammates and home plate umpire in the bkg. after what appears to be a home run. Silvio began his professional baseball career in 1937 w/the Marianao ball club of the Cuban League. During the 1940s, Garcia would play in the US Negro Leagues for the New York Cubans, helping them win the league championship in 1947 after batting .324. In Cuba, he had a lifetime batting average of .282, playing primarily for Cienfuegos. Postcard exhibits significant handling, including a 3" heavy crease in the upper left corner. White borders surrounding the central image exhibit staining and paper loss in a few spots. Back of photo contains significant amount of scrapbook residue along w/a few handwritten notations which are not legible except for "Silvio Garcia" and "1956." Good. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
