Item Description
8x10" vintage silver gelatin photo depicts Cuban League baseball great José María Fernández posing on ballfield w/two children along w/woman in formal attire. "Fotografio Novoa" photographer's stamp on back. Fernández began his professional baseball career in 1916, playing for the pre-Negro League's Cuban Stars (East). Fernández would play/manage a total of 35 seasons in Negro League baseball, primarily w/the Cuban Stars and later, the New York Cubans. Additionally, Fernández spent numerous winters playing in Cuba, mostly w/Almendares, compiling a lifetime batting average of .277. Quality of photo image is superior, w/creases and surface wrinkles throughout image and at corners. Back of photo has identification noted in ink along w/lt. margin foxing. VG.
