Item Description
8x10" vintage silver gelatin photo depicts 21 ballplayers in full uniform posed in front of stadium seating in Venezuela. "Foto C.J. Muguera - Caracas" photographer's stamp at lower right. Highlight of this photo is the presence of former Negro League great Tetelo Vargas (front row, fourth from right). Hailing from the Dominican Republic and beginning his professional baseball career in 1927 w/the NL Cuban Stars, Vargas was one of the rare 5-tool players of his era, great hitter, w/power, speedy runner, defensive whiz w/a strong arm from the outfield. Vargas would later play for the New York Cubans during the late 1930s into the early 1940s and finished his career in the Mexican League in 1953. Photo exhibits superior image quality and eye appeal w/lt. margin and corner wear. Back of photo is blank and exhibits lt. foxing around the edges. VF. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
