Item Description
One of only four known examples, 1.25". We've seen this button with the typical Whitehead & Hoag maker's backpaper used in their 1.25" buttons from 1900-1912. However, this back paper reads in full: "The Salvation Army/Uniform and Outfit/Department/London". Much of the paper's edge is sealed under the celluloid within the channel created by the collet so it is impossible for this paper to be anything but original. In fact, we've seen papers with this text but they are on the back of c. 1909 buttons, also 1.25" picturing William Booth the English preacher who founded the Salvation Army in 1865 in London. Regardless of the back paper, this button was created because, in the twilight of his fabled career, Cy Young joined the Cleveland Naps in 1909. "Welcome Home" references the fact that Young was born in Gilmore, Ohio 105 miles due south of Cleveland. Young's return to Ohio was celebrated by a men's and boy's wear business in Cleveland on Euclid at Fourth named Wageman's Quality Store. Young finished his Major League baseball career with a record of 511-315 with an ERA of 2.63 and 2,803 strikeouts and was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1937. The button has extremely light and general surface wear largely only seen microscopically. No stain. Nice gloss. Exc. Paul Muchinsky Collection Book Example.
