Item Description
1.25" without maker name. A thin purple ribbon comes out of a pressed cotton miniature baseball with game 5 hand notation on ball "Oct. 7/A 1/STL 5" and is held by the button's spring pin. This souvenir, sold at Shibe Park, has a large gray logo "A" on one side of the ball and the fan who bought it penciled his notation on the blank area below the "A". This 1931 Philadelphia Athletics ball club won their third consecutive American League pennant with one of the best records of all-time, 107-45 under National Baseball Hall of Fame manager Connie Mack, baseball's all-time winningest manager. Leading the offense for this juggernaut team was the Hall of Fame trio of Mickey Cochrane (C), Jimmy Foxx (1B) and Al Simmons (OF), all three in the prime of their respective careers. The mound corps was led by HOF'ers: Lefty Grove and Waite Hoyt. The Athletics would go on to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1931 World Series in an exciting seven game series to claim the World's Championship. The ball has a 1/16" shallow hole in its surface about 1" to the left of the letter "A". The button is glossy and Exc. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
