Item Description
One of only four known examples, 2" button, no maker. This single day issue button was produced for a special New York Giants tribute to Mays which took place on August 8, 1954. Among the gifts that Willie received from the team that day were a television, an air conditioner, and a plot of land in the New York suburbs. 1954 was a banner year for Mays as he won the National League batting title and the National League MVP Award. The New York Giants swept the Cleveland Indians in the World Series and he further secured his fame thanks to a Game 1 blast off the bat of Cleveland's Vic Wertz which Mays managed to run down in the outer reaches of the Polo Grounds to make what became known as "The Catch". After a few seasons playing in the Negro Leagues, Mays began his Major League career with the New York Giants in 1951 and would stay with the Giants through their move to San Francisco in 1958 before finally moving on to the New York Mets to finish out the last two seasons of his career in 1972-73. Widely regarded as the greatest all-around player that the game has ever seen, Mays finished with a career batting average of .302 along with 660 home runs, 1,903 RBI's and 338 stolen bases. Willie was also selected as the National League's Rookie of the Year in 1951 and won a second NL MVP award in 1965 along with being a 24 time all-star selection. Mays was selected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979. Open back and spring pin with some pinpoint age dots around the reverse collet. Celluloid has a few widely scattered and tiny raised surface bumps and typical light, small, surface marks that will catch reflected light. The button is perfectly centered and glossy. VF.
