Item Description
15x19-3/8" artboard w/tempura original art painted in Nov. 1960 and first used for the cover April 1961 issue of "Amazing Stories," which was a 35th Anniversary issue and featured "7 Of The Greatest SF Stories Ever Written." The cover to this issue was painted by Frank R. Paul (1884-1963), a noted Sci-Fi pulp magazine artist and member of the Science Fiction Hall of Fame. Border illustrations feature seven vignettes, representing the seven stories collected within the issue. Top left image is recreation of Aug. 1928 "Amazing Stories" cover (that issue's "Armageddon - 2419" story featured the debut of Buck Rogers), other scenes from the stories listed on the cover include spaceport scene from Ray Bradbury's "I, Rocket" story, a robot w/snarling dog for "I, Robot" by Eando Binder, scene w/one-eyed, blob-like aliens enveloping humans from "Devolution" story, as well as scene w/two beings w/extra large heads (a sea serpent is seen in bkg.), another scene shows gyroscopic tank-like vehicle and another scene shows futuristic scene w/minuscule citizens taking flight in multiple lightbulb-shaped vessels from "Out Of The Sub-Universe" story. Remaining two stories "John Carter And The Giant Of Mars" and "The Flying Fool" are included among the illustrations. Lower right has been signed "Paul." This same art was later used for a 1970 "Science Fiction Classics" annual. After that, the art was gifted back to Paul from the publisher, w/a vintage photo of Paul at work (painting "Martian Science Fiction" cover) attached. Bottom margin has inked production notations and center area where story titles/authors went is blank aside from aforementioned photo. Some scattered aging to brown paper bkg., which has .75" tear at lower left margin. Artboard has small hole at top right as well as left/right center margins and pinholes at bottom corners. Margin have scattered handling wear/dust soiling, but main art areas remain clean and would display Exc. if matted and framed. Great Sci-Fi pulp magazine original art.
