Item Description
3.5x5.5" vintage matte postcard depicting 17 ballplayers in full uniform along with two gentlemen dressed in formal attire posed on a baseball field. Caption at the bottom of photo reads "Varsity 1913". One of the early powers of Big Ten baseball at the turn of the century, the Illini baseball team would soon feature one of pro football's all-time legends, "Papa Bear" George Halas but this image pre-dates Halas' entry into the University of Illinois by a couple of seasons. Image clarity of this photo is fantastic, corners exhibit lt., even wear with divided postcard back remaining blank and postally unused with some lt. foxing along the left edge. CYKO stamp box dates the postcard to 1904-1920s, which is consistent with the subject matter presented. VF. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
