Item Description
4-7/8x7" vintage matte photo mounted on a book cover to overall dimensions of 8x10" depicting a pair of ballplayers posed with bats in hand on a stadium baseball field. Pictured here are long-time Cuban baseball stars, Miguel Gonzalez (left) and Armando Marsans (right) prior to a ballgame during the 1914 Cincinnati Reds baseball season. This image of Gonzalez is especially important because it pictures him during his rookie season of Major League baseball and is almost certainly his earliest known image playing in the US Major Leagues as well as being the only year that he would play for the Reds. Gonzales would go on to have a long and productive career in the Majors before finally retiring as a player in 1932. Marsans would spend his fourth and final season with Cincinnati in 1914 before bouncing around with several other MLB clubs prior to his last season in the US in 1918 with the New York Yankees. Image clarity of the photo is excellent, three heavy, horizontal creases break paper in a few spots. Mount has remnants of vintage paper tape attached along with corner wear and a 2.5" piece missing from the lower left hand corner. Back of mount has handwritten date of April 20, 1914 along with the player identifications and more vintage paper tape attached. Photographer's paper caption remains attached in center but text is largely not discernable. Good. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
