Item Description
4.75x7-7/8" vintage glossy photo depicting three Habana (Cuba) ballplayers in full uniform posed with groups of palm trees in the background. Back of photo contains handwritten date of October, 1945 along with player identifications from left to right: Natilla Jimenez, Cocaina Garcia and Isidoro Leon. A couple of other notes in Spanish appear as well. The star of this Habana trio is Cocaina Garcia, who spent 11 seasons from 1926-36 playing in the U.S. Negro Leagues, primarily for the Cuban Stars as one of their ace pitchers of the late 1920s and early 1930s. Following his final Negro league season, Garcia would spend the entire decade of summers during the 1940's playing in the Mexican League along with some winter ball time in Cuba, primarily with Habana. During a five year period from 1942-46, Cocaina had won-loss records on the mound of 19-14, 16-12, 13-10, 18-11 and 14-10. Image quality of the photo is excellent, some minor surface wrinkles and paper pressures are visible, back exhibits some scattered, lt. staining throughout. Fine. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
