Item Description
1.25" w/W&H back paper. From a wonderfully designed Detroit team button set with Buster holding "Morton's" bakery flowing pennant that pictures a tiger while he points with opposite hand to large smiling photo of Cobb. Buster's usual canine sidekick Tige has been replaced with a grinning and winking tiger who holds a bat as he sits on his haunches and waves with one paw.
This fascinating 15 piece button series was undoubtedly issued to promote a local baker by capitalizing on the success of the three-time defending American League champion Detroit Tigers baseball club and their three Hall of Fame stars, Ty Cobb, Sam Crawford and Hughie Jennings. Cobb was the unquestioned top hitter in baseball at this time, winning batting titles year after year and finishing with the all-time record for career batting average at .366. Ty would become part of the inaugural Baseball Hall of Fame class of 1936, joining fellow all-time greats: Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson and Walter Johnson. Reverse by the collet has two barely visible cello splits, likely as made, one a mere 1/32" and the other under 1/8". Only noted for complete accuracy. Most importantly, the front is a gorgeous, glossy, perfectly centered high grade example with almost no surface wear. Exc. The most desirable button in the set.
