Item Description
1.25", no maker w/spring pin holding red ribbon which has tiny 1/8" hole where it goes over the collet. Ribbon is glued to back of glossy stiff cardboard pennant. All three we've seen from this series (see next lot) have a straight line at the tip so we think this is as made and not missing a pointed tip. Last auction we offered the NL Champs variety. The surface has small all over age lines on the glossy finish which catch reflected light. The 1939-40 Cincinnati Reds were winners of the National League pennant in back-to-back seasons with records of 97-57 in 1939 and 100-53 in 1940 under National Baseball Hall of Fame manager Bill McKechnie, named on this piece.  Both Cincinnati ball clubs were led by future Hall of Fame star catcher Ernie Lombardi, who was the National League MVP the previous season in 1938. Although the Reds lost the 1939 World Series to the mighty New York Yankees in four straight games, they came back to defeat the Detroit Tigers in seven games the following year to become the 1940 World Champions. Pennant is VF and button is Exc. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
