Item Description
3.5" no maker w/gray steel metal back and brass bar pin. Button issued to commemorate the active American League home run race that was going on during the 1961 season as New York Yankees teammates, Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris were both making an assault on Babe Ruth's all-time single season home run record of 60 set all the way back in 1927. Unfortunately Mantle's chance was cut short by injury during the season's final weeks and he finished at 54 homers. Maris, however, persevered and ultimately eclipsed Ruth's record by hitting his 61st home run on the season's final day. Roger's accomplishment would be noted in the record books with an asterisk next to it as he needed a total of 162 games to accomplish the feat while "The Babe" hit his 60 homers during a 154 game season. Button has numerous but widely scattered and light surface scratches that show in reflected light but barely at all with normal viewing. There is one tiny raised cello bump as made caused by reverse pin in assembly. High gloss and no stain. VF. A very desirable baseball pin-back button. Paul Muchinsky Collection Book Example.
