Item Description
Six approx. 17.75x24.5" Strathmore Craftint artboards feature pen and ink original art for complete six-page story originally published in DRAG Cartoons #1 in June/July 1963 by Pete Millar (1929-2003), illustrator, cartoonist and drag racer known for his work w/CARtoons and DRAG Cartoons magazines. Art is for Custer Stands Last! story, which was the very first story in the very first issue of DRAG Cartoons. Story deals w/Custer and his men as car parts dealers and hotrodder Native Americans at Sitting Bull's Car Club. A battle ensues after Custer's faulty car parts are discovered and Custer disguises himself as a Native American and escapes, only to be misidentified upon his return and attacked. Story ends w/cleanshaven Custer selling custard pies. Of note, Native American depictions are of the period, w/terms like "Injuns" and "Red-Skin" used. First artboard has cut-out replacement word bubble text. Each artboard comes w/Rubylith printers overlay and vellum sheets between each artboard. Either top of bottom margins have "Millar Publication - DRAG Cartoons" inkstamp w/inked page numbers at bottom left and inkstamp w/handwritten printer job notations at bottom right. Margins have some scattered editorial notations and artboards have staple holes at top margins and some corner tip wear. Art remains clean and Exc. From the Archives of Publisher Pete Millar.
