Item Description
7/8" w/"New York 157" union bug in field. Moderate wear from light use. Exc. This button likely dates from 1936 when a strike was called in response to Joseph Curran's wildcat strike aboard the S.S. California. That same year Curran called a second strike, known as the Gulf Coast maritime workers strike, to apply pressure on ISU's conservative leadership. He then began forming the National Maritime Union (NMU) and by 1938 had 50,000 members and the majority of American shipping contracts.
