Item Description
Only example known to Hake's. 1.25". W&H back paper dates this to 1898-1900. The late 19th century Cuban Giants baseball club is widely recognized as the first African American professional baseball team. The Cuban Giants were originally formed in 1885 at the Argyle Hotel, a summer resort in Babylon, New York. The team was so skilled in the game, and achieved victory over so many of the nearby amateur "white" teams that they attracted the attention of promoter Walter Cook. To appeal to a broader audience, Cook styled them the "Cuban Giants", although there were rarely (if ever) any Cubans on the Cuban Giants. The club remained one of the premier Negro league teams for nearly 20 years and went on to become the "World Colored Champions" of 1887 and 1888, and spawned imitators such as the Genuine Cuban Giants and Original Cuban Giants. The most prominent ballplayers to don the Cuban Giants uniform before the turn of the century were a pair of National Baseball Hall of Fame selectees, Sol White and Frank Grant. Following the 1900 season, many of the team's top players moved on to the Cuban X-Giants ball club, instantly making them one of the top teams in the east until their demise in 1906. Pinpoint nick on "B" shows only w/magnification, as does other trivial surface wear. Clean and glossy appearance. Exc. A must have rarity for the baseball historian. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
