Item Description
2-5/8x3-3.75". The 1953 Topps set was originally planned for 280 cards but six players did not agree to contracts with the card company and, therefore, had to be omitted from that season's issue. Cards feature painted player pictures with a color team logo appearing in a bottom panel. Card backs contain the first baseball card trivia questions along with brief stats and player bios. Issued at the midpoint of Jackie Robinson's legendary MLB career, this card has always been a collector's favorite as it was the first card issued within the '53 Topps set, thus, making it highly condition sensitive and quite a challenge to uncover in even mid-grade condition. After beginning his professional baseball career in the Negro Leagues playing for the Kansas City Monarchs during the mid-1940's, Robinson would later sign a contract for Branch Rickey's Brooklyn Dodgers ball club and ultimately broke the long-standing color barrier in Major League Baseball on April 15, 1947. Jackie was an NL MVP, NL Rookie of the Year, World Champion, 6-time NL All-Star and was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962. The example offered here is well centered with a crystal clear image, CSG 2.5 Good+.
