Item Description
The 1941 Washington Homestead Grays were first half winners of the Negro National League (East) while the New York Cubans were declared second half winners. the Grays would come out on top in the championship series, taking their fifth straight pennant without their biggest star, Josh Gibson, all season long as he remained in Mexico for the summer after signing a lucrative contract. Leading the attack in 1941 were Hall of Famers Buck Leonard, Jud Wilson and Ray Brown. Offered here is original hand-addressed "Homestead Grays" mailing envelope hand-addressed to baseball promoter G. Quinn of Detroit, MI from Seward Hayes "See" Posey, Negro League executive and Business Manager of the Homestead Grays. Seward was also the older brother of Homestead Grays Secretary Cum Posey (HOF) and would later go on to take over the ballclub after the death of Grays President Rufus Jackson. Envelope has been addressed in Posey's hand and has been opened at right w/uneven edge and shows obvious wear w/some aging/staining. VG. Handwritten letter is on "Homestead Grays - Negro National League Pennant Winners 1937-38-39-40" letterhead (w/"Member Negro National League" at bottom) w/names/titles of Jackson and both Posey brothers at top. Letter is dated June 24, 1941 and reads in part "How Is Colored Baseball In Detroit. Is There A Park Available? Has It Lights? Could You Book Homestead Grays & Phila Stars In July? We Pay 10% To Promoters. Kindly Let Me Hear From You As Soon As Possible." and has been signed "S.H. Posey" at bottom. Letter has been folded as mailed and has moderate scattered aging/staining. VG/Fine. A rarely seen Negro League related signature. Comes with Hake's COA and JSA LOA.
