Item Description
6-7/8x9.75" Vol.1 #2 for Oct. 1934 has card stock covers and 20 well illustrated bw pages. Published by The Colored Baseball & Sports Pub. Co. New York City. Front cover photo of Oscar Charleston in Pittsburgh uniform shaking hands with Richard "Dick" Lundy in Newark uniform. Great content throughout that includes the Pittsburgh Crawfords (with Charleston), Satchel Paige, Jud Wilson, Newark Dodgers center spread w/team photo, team pages for the Philadelphia Stars and Pennsylvania Red Caps, Philadelphia Stars team photo as well as articles on the upcoming 1934 football season and "The Tribune Girls" all-black female basketball team the Philadelphia Tribune Girls Basket Ball Team. Cover has heavy creasing, wear and age and a penciled notation "Don't Destroy This Book." Contents aged as well w/some moisture staining but a complete and intact issue. Just Good but a rarely seen publication which saw limited distribution. The only other copy of this issue we have offered was from the Merkin Collection (slightly higher grade) which realized $3,801 in 2011. Also included (as it was tucked away inside) is a hand-made/written scoring ledger highlighting the top quartet of Negro League baseball teams for the 1934 season: Pittsburgh Crawfords, Philadelphia Stars, Chicago American Giants and New York Black Yankees. The day's pitching matching match-up pits Slim Jones against all-time great, Satchel Paige.
