Item Description
Only example known to Hake's. 1.25". No maker. Portait photo of Harry Von der Horst who was an executive in Major League Baseball and a former owner of the Baltimore Orioles and Brooklyn Superbas. He was one of the principal founders and owners of the old 19th century Baltimore Orioles ballclub and when the team was running out of steam he managed to engineer a merger with the Brooklyn B.B.C., whose majority owner at the time was Charles Ebbets, as noted along the bottom rim of the button. This move enabled Von der Horst to acquire a significant share of the team and exert enough influence to convince the Brooklyn ownership group to hire his manager, Ned Hanlon. He eventually sold his interest in the team, but remained as the club secretary until his death in 1905 at age 54 from heart failure. This button appears to have been produced to attract interest from the Superbas' fans of the female persuasion as notated along the top rim.  Some rim staining. Surface wear mostly only seen under magnification. Other aging but front surface remains glossy. VG. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
