Item Description
1.25". W&H back paper. From a wonderfully designed Detroit team button set of 15 different (see following eight lots) showing Buster holding "Morton's" bakery flowing pennant that pictures a tiger while he points with opposite hand to the team member's portrait photo. Buster's usual canine sidekick Tige has been replaced with a grinning and winking tiger who holds a bat as he sits on his haunches and waves with one paw. This button series was undoubtedly issued to promote a local baker by capitalizing on the success of the three-time defending American League champion Detroit Tigers baseball club and their three Hall of Fame stars, Ty Cobb, Sam Crawford and Hughie Jennings. Presented here is starting shortstop, Donie Bush, who led the American League five times in plate appearances, twice in runs scored and five times in walks during his time with Detroit from 1908-21. Pinpoint nick on nose and moderate surface wear in reflected light. VF. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
