Item Description
1.25" without dot pattern and with tanned back paper of St. Paul firm "Shepherd Photo Co." Adams, born 1853,  began his career as an infant with his uncle James E. Cooke and worked many years in Europe. He arrived in America in the 1870s where his  specialty was a clown act on stilts. He was also a pantomime, expert gymnast, contortionist and first-class rider. He organized a "Humpty Dumpty" troupe and this button is from the 1890s when he was in partnership with Adam Forepaugh. Cello surface has very fine scattered scratch lines just showing in reflected light. An early and historic circus related button. Only example we've seen and the button photographed for the book Button Power by Carter and Hake. Comes w/Hake's COA. Exc.
