Item Description
1.25" shows enraged apple peddler beating his fallen horse with the Angel of Mercy floating above holding sword in one hand while raising her other hand to stop the brutality. We've seen four examples with two different imprints. This reads "S.F.S.P.C.A. Band Of Mercy." Only the second we've seen with this W&H back paper c. 1900 reading with larger text "Membership Badge/Presented By The San Francisco Society Of Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals." Among the earliest issues for the animal welfare cause and superb graphics. Minor defects of 1/16" scratch above apples, off-center by about 1/32" and faint age trace very edge from 1-3 o'clock. High gloss. Great color. Rare and VF. Alan Weinberg Collection.
