Item Description
1.75" dia. cello button suspended from brass shell hanger w/"Delegate" insert. Button has filled metal back and was produced specifically for this badge. Portraits of Big Bill Haywood, general secretary of the WFM, Charles Moyer, president of the WFM and George Pettibone, a labor activist w/text "Their Only Crime/Loyalty To The Working Class." In 1906 all three men were arrested and charged w/the murder of former Idaho Gov. Frank Steunberg after notorious Pinkerton detective James McParland coerced assassin Albert Horsley into implicating them. The arrests and trials produced headlines across the nation. Reactions varied w/famous labor leader Mother Jones raising money for the men and President Roosevelt calling them "undesirable citizens". Clarence Darrow defended Haywood who was found not guilty in July of 1907. After the trial Eugene Debs called Haywood "The Lincoln Of Labor". In 1908 Pettibone was acquitted and charges against Moyer were dropped. Spots of foxing affecting the "ty" in "Loyalty" and the "O" in "Only". Otherwise, scattered air marks in field at left. VF. Missing original IWW backing ribbon that linked the badge to the groups 1906 14th Annual Convention in Denver, CO. Only the third example we have encountered in 55 years.
