Item Description
3.25" long brass locket including hanging loop. Paper insert around interior under glass has hand inscribed notation "Autograph And Hair Of Henry Clay Presented By Him To Jno. F. Trumbull, March 10th, 1848." Paper insert frames cut signature "H. Clay Of Ashland". Verso has ornate embossed fillagree design framing a lock of white hair housed under glass at top center. Prior to mass availability of photographs, locks of hair were a tradition as a way of remembering, having an object to recall someone near to the person or admirer. Celebrities of the time became sought after artifacts as illustrated by the ornate sealed under glass display produced for this lock of Clay's hair. Signature cut has minor handling and tiny hole at top center w/ink remaining bold and legible. Overall Exc. An impressive artifact of the "Great Compromiser". Signature comes w/Hake's COA and JSA LOA.
