Item Description
8.25x19.75x2.25" deep box contains one of the nicest space toys we've ever offered. 1950s by Masudaya/Modern Toys, Japan. Lid features great space scene based on the toy along w/spaceman and small inset diagram of the toy itself. Two additional side panels feature image of space car streaking through space. Lid has lt. aging, one corner split, minor .5" puncture along right edge o/w tight, VF and complete w/cardboard inserts. The tin litho toy has an overall size of 2x19x8" tall and comes complete w/pair of 2.25" long tin litho space race cars. At bottom right serving as part of the platform base is the battery box unit. Directly above this is large circular space station w/four different colored plastic insert disks. The space scene that appears as the bkg. next to this space station includes rocket ship streaking through space, flying saucer, planets and stars. The top side edge is also decorated w/stars and planets. Side edge of space station includes images of windows through which machinery and equipment can be viewed as well as a porthole which is open revealing spaceman inside and second spaceman floating above by means of a tether cord. A detail of this is shown in our photo. The two cars have same design including image of spaceman driver and this appears on both top and bottom of the car as they are designed to flip over during operation so this image is always visible. The two halves of one car are rw while the other is silver/yellow. Toy works and the cars travel around the "space track" eventually entering the space station which rotates and lifts the car from the bottom track to the top track so that it can continue on. As the space station spins, the four colored disks light. Toy has just minute scattered paint nicks and scratches but remains totally bright and glossy. Exc. to N. Mint. From the Hake collection.
