Item Description
1.25" complete w/back paper promoting issuer "American Pepsin Gum Co." and button maker "Whitehead & Hoag."
From a series of over 100 baseball players (see next lot), all buttons in this series are rare. This was the first celluloid baseball button set as well as the only significant issue of any type dating from the 1890s. Many players in this set appeared in no other button issue. Featured on this button is Frank Bowerman, catcher for the Batlimore Orioles 1895-98. He also played for the Pirates, Giants and Boston Doves. He was the first to catch HOFer Christy Mathewson. Back paper has some aging but is complete and intact. Thin trace of staining around most of the rim, and mostly on the curl, but with some showing on the front from 12-3 o'clock. Age toning but image remains distinct. Moderate surface wear, much only seen in reflected light. Surface remains glossy. VG.
