Item Description
1" tall with front in thick and slightly convex (rounded) black and white enamel and back all in lustrous brass with a .75" vertical pin with clasp and no maker's name. Oswald The Lucky Rabbit originated as a Disney character and the first Disney related pin-back button which pictures Disney's Oswald was offered as a promotional give-away in the August, 1927 issue of Universal Weekly, a movie industry trade journal. While successful, Disney lost control of the character in 1928 and famously created a new character, Mickey Mouse, on his train ride back to Los Angeles from New York City. In 1929, Carl Laemmle, head of Universal Studios hired Walter Lantz to take over the cartoons including a character re-design. This early 1930s pin closely matches the Lantz design except the pin design does not include a shirt. It does, however, show the addition of white gloves and shoes, he has a cuter face which includes pie-cut eyes, and he has a larger head with shorter ears. His single suspender from the Disney era is gone and now his shorts are accented by not two buttons like Mickey, but three. There is a 1/16" square enamel chip gone from the base of his left ear. There is one tiny hairline in the enamel of his extended arm (seen only under magnification) and a pinpoint dot of brass showing on each of his heels. Overall VF with full gloss intact. Only example known to us. A most historic cartoon character enamel pin.
