Item Description
10.5x16" artboard w/pen an ink original art for page 3 of Superman #279, published by DC Comics in Sept. 1974. Art is by comic artist Curt Swan (1920-1996), best known as the artist most associated w/Superman titles during the period fans and historians call the Silver Age of comic books. Swan produced hundreds of covers and stories from the 1950s through the 1980s. Offered here is a page from a story that sees Superman team up w/Batgirl (a Gotham Congresswoman at the time) when it is revealed Superman/Clark Kent has stepped in as Batman to host a charity concert while Batman stops oil smugglers in Gotham Harbor. For more original art pages from this story, see the following five lots. Art offered here is for page 3, which features five panels, showing Superman wearing Batman's uniform and swinging into packed theater to fulfil his duties as Master of Ceremonies. Second panel shows Barbara Gordon (Batgirl) in her civilian persona as Congresswoman Gordon watching "Batman" spin through the air while the actual Batman spies on smugglers from the darkness of the pier in last two panels. Superman appears in first three panels (in disguise and using his "Super Ventriloquism" to impersonate Batman in one) while Barbara Gordon and the real Batman appear in a single panel each. Swan has signed final panel above Batman. Some blue pencil editorial notes/marks at top of second and third panels. Top margin has stamped title w/issue/page number in grease pencil. Back has DC copyright inkstamp and inked price. Aged strip of tape at top center margin, but o/w art remains clean and Exc.
