Item Description
Lot of five pieces dating to 1967. Grouping of three typed letters/memorandum related to inquiry by The Columbus Ledger Entertainment Editor (Reggie Capes) regarding Marvel Comics, its comics, writers/artists and characters. Letters are from Joseph Field of the public relations firm Joseph Field Associates, w/first letter dated June 21, 1967. Letter answers Capes' questions in order, providing history of the comics, noting the popularity of the characters, mentions the Merry Marvel Marching Society (MMMS) and notes included "Brief Biographies Of Marvel Editor And Artists" typed packet. Of special note, letter mentions included "drawing" of a Marvel superhero (Spider-Man) and photo of Stan Lee. Letter has been signed in blue ink. The biographies packet covers Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Roy Thomas, Don Heck, Dick Ayers and Gerry Friedrich. Second letter is dated June 26, 1967 and has some follow-up corrections, specifically calling out Jack Kirby as being more important than the biography made him seem. Letter has been signed in blue ink by Field. Both first letter and biographies have some small blue ink corrections. Papers have some lt. even aging and second letter has been folded as mailed. All are Exc. 3.5x4.5" snapshot shows full body drawing of Spider-Man while glossy 8x10" photo shows Stan Lee at his desk, looking over original art for an issue of Strange Adventures. Both have red pencil printer notations at margins and both have penciled notations ob backs, w/Spider-Man photo having "The Problem-Plagued" caption. Both bear last name of Reggie Capes as well as "Ledger" notation and newspaper printer inkstamps. Photos show scattered handling wear and are VF overall. A truly one-of-a-kind lot for the 1960s Marvel collector. See following lot for Christmas card sent to Capes.
