Item Description
In 1936 Walt Disney left United Artists and signed on w/RKO to distribute his animated shorts/cartoons. That studio, in conjunction w/Disney, decided they needed to produce eye-catching promotional material for the animated cartoons. They began by producing silk-screened 30x40" posters instead of the more typical one-sheet posters and they also tested this standee w/collapsible wooden standee backing as an in-theater advertising vehicle (featuring a replaceable placard) to bring audiences in. This large full color standee was printed and then applied to a pressboard backing and wooden easel back for display in theater lobbies. The individual placards such as the one offered here (advertising the 1938 Mickey Mouse cartoon Boat Builders) were then distributed to the exhibitor, who would attach the placard to the standee. Standee measures 35.25x60-3/8" tall and depicts full body image of Mickey Mouse, who stands w/one arm raised, w/marquee area at top designed for displaying the previously mentioned placards as if Mickey is holding them. Standee has had moderate scattered professional restoration w/some scattered wear to left/right corners of bottom green portion. Faint horizontal crease at Mickey's waist, not distracting. Back of standee has also pulled away from pressboard, resulting in some surface pulls. Front however maintains Exc. display as restored. Comes w/13-7/8x28.5" title placard for use w/display, featuring three scenes from Boat Builders cartoon; showing Donald Duck attempting to plug holes in ship's hull w/corks as Mickey and Goofy look on, Donald reacting angrily as he sits atop mast of sinking ship w/Mickey and Goofy in the water and Goofy shyly offering flower to ships' buxom figurehead. Placard has curled somewhat at left/right, and as placard has been attached to standee w/velcro, this has begun to pull from standee, resulting in surface lifts at left/right. Still displays nicely from front and makes for a wonderful display piece, easily to become the centerpiece of any Disney collection. One of just two examples of these rare displays we've seen, the previous one we offered sold for $6,198 in 2014. Due to size and/or weight of this item, shipping charges may be substantial.
