Item Description
1" in ornate brass frame. Text "Gen. Taylor Never Surrenders" encircling "Taylor And Fillmore" at center on verso. Daguerreotype portrait of candidate w/hand applied gold shell accents to epaulettes and coat buttons. This is the earliest photographic campaign badge known to us and is unlisted in DeWitt/Sullivan. While badges from the 1852 campaign have been seen even they are of much cruder construction. Image has solarized but remains visible especially in reflected light, VG. Shell has only minor wear, Exc. This shell badge w/campaign slogan on verso and detailed hand applied gold accents would have been labor intensive to produce and come at an unusual high cost for the time. An important piece of political campaign material culture and photographic history. The only example we have encountered in 56 years.
