Item Description
9x11.25" hardcover has dust jacket with nice art of Native American elder smiling and carving figures for young Native American girls. Book contains 52 stiff paper pages with story and numerous full color pages by Swinnerton. ©1965, published by Best-West Publications. Blank fly-leaf page has 4x5" area near center with inscription "To Dr. John James Swinnerton" with what appears to be a self-caricature of artist Swinnerton himself in profile with landscape in bkg. including adobe home. Art is signed just below his image "Swinnerton-." He is noted for his "Little California Bear" cartoon series in the 1890s as well as being the creator of the comic strip "Little Jimmy" as well as "Canyon Kiddies" in Good Housekeeping magazine in the 1920s-1930s. He would go on to even greater fame with his paintings of the Arizona desert. Dust wrapper has light dust soil, blank inside covers have light foxing around edges but overall book is Exc. with N. Mint drawing.
