Item Description
17x23-1/8" artboard has pen and ink original art for one-page cartoon published in MAD Magazine #171 in Dec. 1974. Art is by longtime MAD cartoonist Don Martin (1931-2000) and is titled "One Morning In Surgery." Featuring three panels, it shows Martin's iconic slapstick character having just finished surgery, w/surgeon stating "This Was One Tough Operation! I Had To Re-Build His Entire Face... Practically Piece By Piece!" Last panel reveals surgical tray w/forgotten nose, leading to one of Martin's famed hair-raising reaction gags. Martin has signed last panel. Inked title at bottom left w/"#170" issue number crossed out and corrected. Additional editorial notations appear at top/bottom margins. Text is pasted stat strips, w/some looseness to largest strip. Top margin has strip of tape staining from overlay that was once attached (no longer present). Left/right and bottom center margins have aged printer centering tape strips. Scattered pin holes across top margin (one in first panel, covered w/white correction fluid and not affecting art) as well as between second and third panels. VF overall, but art remains clean and would make for Exc. matted and framed display.
