Item Description
11-1/8x17-1/8" Marvel Comics artboard has pen and ink original art by Sam Kieth depicting Ghost Rider (Danny Ketch) surrounded by D'Sprytes, the goblin-like minions of the Fear Lord D'Spayre (which bear noted similarities to Kieth's Isz characters from his Image Comics series The Maxx). This original art was published as the back cover of this issue; a "Flip Cover," as the image was inverted. This cover art directly ties in with the "D'Spryte Times, D'Spryte Measures (Part 2) - Fallen Spirits" storyline in this issue, which was published by Marvel Comics, March 1992. The story sees Ghost Rider battling the invisible D'Sprytes, who manipulate a crowd to attack Ghost Rider. Using his Hell Cycle to block the innocents from the D'Sprytes, the are quickly defeated by Ghost Rider's chains, which come apart and fly into their intended targets like ninja stars. Of note, Kieth has depicted Ghost Rider without his trademark studded leather jacket (which he wears for the interior story as drawn by Jimmy Palmiotti), opting to show his bare, skeletal arms instead, a D'Spryte clenched in his gloved hand as other bites his shirt, arm bones and oversized motorcycle boots. The "Marvel Comics Presents - Ghost Rider" title logo stat has been hand-cut, allowing Kieth's flame effects surrounding Ghost Rider's skull to partially obscure title. Kieth has signed at lower right. Publishing indicia (including aged Spider-Man image) at top left are pasted stats. Staple holes across top margin, but not overly distracting and art remains clean and Exc. Stunning Ghost Rider cover art, fully displaying Kieth's distinct illustrative style. This is the first time this art has been offered at auction. Kieth cover art is in high demand and does not come up for sale often, making this a fortuitous opportunity for collectors. From the collection of Terry Kavanagh, former Marvel Comics editor/writer.
