Item Description
7/8". Has Whitehead & Hoag back paper that was only used from 1900-1912. It's quite likely this button dates to 1901, the year the American League of Professional Baseball Clubs was established. Great "Baseball" design that includes red/blue stitches along w/company text that includes "Sole Makers/Philadelphia at bottom and "Reach Trade Mark" at top. A larger 1.25" size was also made. Alfred James Reach (1840-1928) was a sportsman who, after becoming one of the early stars of baseball in the National Association, went on to become an influential executive, publisher, sporting goods manufacturer and spokesman for the sport. Reach was the trade name used on the game balls for the American League until 1976.
