Item Description
Action Comics #1 introduced the world to Superman when it debuted on newsstand racks on April 18, 1938. Offered here is 5-7/8x8.5" single-sided "Notice" sheet sent to retailers by Interborough News Company - Country Dept. of New York City. Text reads in part "This Is To Advise You That Action Comics The Publication That Carries The Superman Story Is Enjoying An Amazing Sale. It Is Destined To Be The Outstanding Comic Book On Newsstands. Please Check Up At Once And See That You Have Enough On Your Stand So As To Satisfy The Demand." As Superman #1 didn't hit newsstands until May 18, 1939 and this notice does not mention it as a title, this notice dates to 1938, making it an early and truly historic piece of Superman history. Sheet has lt. even aging and shows some scattered handling wear w/horizontal crease just below center. Small spot of staining at upper right. Fine/VF overall. The mere survival of this piece is astounding given the fact these were most likely discarded upon receipt, after being read by the recipient. This is the only known example, and the exact same one shown in The Adventures Of Superman Collecting by Harry Matetsky. A must-have for the Golden Age comic historian. Danny Fuchs Collection.
