Item Description
Early 1940s battery-operated lighter has overall size of 3x3x4.5" tall. Bakelite plastic base w/attached solid plated cast metal Superman figure which itself is 3" tall. Complete w/the pull-out cylindrical flame unit which differs from all other examples we've seen in that end reads "H-O Force." This refers to Force Toasted Whole Wheat Flakes cereal, the first commercially successful wheat flake breakfast cereal (beginning production in 1901 by the Force Food Company in Buffalo, NY). In 1940, Force sponsored The Adventures Of Superman radio show, which helped introduce key components of the Superman mythos, like Kryptonite. We believe this version of the lighter was created for cereal company executives and/or others associated w/the radio program, hence the rarity, as a very limited amount would have been produced. Battery box interior is complete but has some oxidation and as such we were not able to get lighter to work. Complete w/underside panel featuring Dunhill company information. Tiniest trace of aging to Superman figure upon close inspection w/thin .25" streak of luster loss on thigh, but near full luster remains on body and lighter displays Exc. overall. A rare Superman item marketed to adults. Comes w/2.5x8.5" Force cereal box panel showing Superman and mentioning radio show that makes for wonderful companion display piece. Lighter represents a true Superman rarity and presents an amazing opportunity for the Superman completist even if they already on the standard variety of this attractive piece. Only known example of this rare variety. Book example from The Adventures Of Superman Collection by Harry Matetsky. Danny Fuchs Collection.
