Item Description
Game No. 530 was designed by Arthur Dritz and produced by American Toy Works in the early 1940s. © Superman Inc. Game consists of 4.5x10" painted wood base w/attached 7.75" tall arms that support 24" long wooden board w/attached die-cut cardboard piece attached to front to give it the appearance of a bridge. This board holds four 3.5" long wooden blocks w/slots containing die-cut cardboard armored cars and tanks (two of each, w/different colors and point values). Front of toy features nearly 8" tall die-cut cardboard piece w/wonderfully illustrated image depicting full body image of Superman, as if he is supporting the bridge. Bottom of this piece has "Superman Action Game" name as well as "No. 530" and game designer/maker names. During play, bridge would rock back and forth to expose another tank/car when one was shot off. Game is missing generic black metal gun and two darts, both of which are easily replaced. Superman and bridge piece have even fading w/some lt. scattered edge wear and aging to small nail heads used in construction. Back of bridge has strip of cardboard along base, which has some surface paper loss at left/right  and 5/8" separation at left. Fine overall. Armored car target vehicles show more moderate wear w/creasing and some separation along top edges. Targets are Fine to VF overall. Comes w/worn panel from game's box lid, which is framed and would make for nice display alongside game. One of the best designed, rarest and most sought after of all Superman toys. We have only offered two boxed examples of this rare game in our 57 years, both selling in excess of $5,000. Another unboxed example in similar condition to the one offered here sold for $2,481 in our Sept. 2020 auction. Book example from The Adventures Of Superman Collection by Harry Matetsky. Danny Fuchs Collection.
