Item Description
8x10". Letter addressed to Tomkinson. Dated December 16, 1894. Area of loss in bottom right corner. Otherwise some age toning along edges w/moderate handling. VG. Porter served in the Mexican American War before serving as a Colonel in the Union Army at the start of the Civil War. He was promoted to Major General in 1862, but was court-martialed and dismissed from the Army in early 1863 following the second battle of Bull Run. He felt he was wrongly court-martialed and spent much of his later life attempting to rectify his disgraced exit from the military. In 1886 President Cleveland commuted Porter's sentence and his commission of Colonel was restored. Newton Powers Tomkinson Collection (see his Featured Collection bio online). Comes w/JSA LOA.
