Item Description
13x19" artboard has pen and ink/mixed media original art for front cover to Zot! #1, published by Eclipse Comics April 1984. Art is by Zot! creator Scott McCloud and features action-packed image of Zacchary T. Paleozog (aka Zot) in flight, dodging raygun blasts as he holds his trusty golden pistol. Jenny Weaver and her brother Butch dodge raygun blasts as Zot's loyal robotic butler Peabody provides backup cover fire. "Eclipse Comics" logo, "Zot!" title/logo and issue number are pasted stats.

Zot! was intended as a lighter alternative to the rise of darker, grittier comics of the 1980s, with McCloud serving up readers science fiction superhero stories. Of the 36 issues, the first 10 were published in color. Despite critical acclaim, the title was initially canceled after 10 issues due to low sales. At this point, the decision was made to relaunch the title in black and white, allowing the comic to run profitably from Jan. 1987 until July 1991.

Top/bottom margins have some scattered blue pencil editorial notes, those at bottom have been crossed out. Lower left margin has been personalized "For Gary And Diane" and signed by McCloud. Single pin hole at top left corner. Back of artboard has two strips of mounting tape at top corners. Title stat has evenly aged and is slightly loose. Margins shows some scattered light soiling, but art remains clean and Exc.

Comes with reading copy of the comic this art was created for. Pages from this title are highly sought after and scarce (with a few from the Denis Kitchen Collection having recently been sold at auction) and of the 36 issues published, Zot! cover art rarely comes to market, let alone cover art from the debut issue of this beloved Eclipse title. Gary and Dawn Guzzo Collection.
