Item Description
4.25x6.5" w/photograph affixed to cardboard mount. These cabinet cards were issued by Goodwin & Co. during 1888-89 as a premium available by exchanging coupons found in Old Judge or Dogs Head brand cigarettes. Since the coupon owner could select any ballplayer from the checklist provided, the majority of surviving examples from this scarce series tend to be the biggest stars of the day. Thus, the more unheralded ballplayers have few, to only a single known surviving example, in many cases. Most but not all of the N173 cabinet card subjects were also included in the N172 Old Judge card series, the most widely collected and coveted baseball card issue of the 19th century. Seward pitched essentially four MLB seasons, from 1887-90, all with the Philadelphia Athletics. During the three year span from 1887-89, Seward won an astounding total of 81 ball games, leading the American Association in shutouts and strikeouts in 1888. Has a bold image w/great clarity. PSA census indicates that this is the only example of this card ever graded by PSA.
