From same series as previous lots. Grover Cleveland Alexander began his MLB career with the Philadelphia Phillies ball club of the National League in 1911. Alexander would spend the first seven seasons of his career with Philly, these would also prove to be his prime years as he would accumulate an astounding total of 190 wins during that time, including three straight 30-win seasons from 1915-17. Following his Phillies tenure GCA would pitch for the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals before wrapping up his career back with Philadelphia in 1930. Grover would be elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1938. Alexander has traditional baseball cards issued in 1913, a National Game card and a Tom Barker game card, as well as a 1914 Cracker Jack card and a T222 Fatima card but this M101-2 Sporting News supplement is considered by many to be a GCA rookie as it pre-dates the others by 2-3 years. The PSA grade does not reflect the exceptional eye appeal of this item which far exceeds the 1.5 Fair grade. Front displays bright, clean and with sharp image. Minimal handling wear mostly only seen upon close inspection. PSA census indicates that only 19 examples of this supplement have ever been graded by PSA with only four graded higher than the offered specimen. One of the keys in the Sporting News set. This is fresh to the market, as are the following seven lots.
