Item Description
Kit includes original envelope w/"Supermen Of America" return address and inked recipient name/address w/patriotic wartime postmark stamp. Envelope shows scattered handling wear w/some scattered staining at upper left. Fine. 5-3/8x8.5" welcome letter notes contents of kit and featuring classic image of Superman breaking chains. Upper left shows heavy wear from buttons w/some small indents/punctures from button at lower left. VG. Certificate and membership kits for this club were issued in many different configurations from 1939 to 1965 (see following lots). Certificate differs in that it features "Detective Comics, Inc." copyright at bottom but no date and bears "169052" issue number. Certificate has typed member name/age/address (which matches that on envelope) on provided lines. This version of the certificate (as well as the welcome letter) mentions "Action Comics" at end. Pair of pin holes w/lighter aging from included button at bottom center. Horizontal fold at center as issued. Fine/VF overall. Cardstock "Superman's Secret Code" decoder folder (used to decipher "Superman's Secret Message" in each issue of Action Comics) has iconic image of Superman breaking chains and back has text/code. Folded as issued w/moderate aging and faint penciling on provided line. Fine. 7/8" dia. size button features same basic design as the club buttons used (w/small changes) from 1940 through 1961, but this is the rarely seen smaller size that used very briefly in 1941. Glossy and Exc. Rare and one of only a few we've offered in our 57 years. Only complete 1941 kit we've offered in our 57 years. Harry Matetsky Collection.
