Item Description
Lot of three 5x8" Edouard Manet (1832-1883) lithographs professionally framed and matted in a UV glass display measuring 15.5x26". The lithographs were taken from the 1889 book, Les Poèmes d'Edgar Poe, featuring French translations of Poe poetry by Stéphane Mallarmé, published by Léon Vanier, Paris. The three lithographs offered here include the title page w/raven bust and plates two and three from the first poem in the book, The Raven. Plate two (on the right) shows Poe opening the window to peer cautiously from the shadows as the raven swoops inside. Plate three (on the left) shows Poe gazing existentially from his chair at the nightmarish raven who is now shadowing his world from the bust perched atop his chamber door. These were originally illustrated by Manet for the 1875 French publication of Le Corbeau (The Raven). Title page is aged w/scattered foxing w/toning across left side. From left to right, the lithographs display as Exc., Good, Exc.
