Item Description
Star Wars Weekly was Marvel UK's Star Wars comic series, reprinting their American counterpart's Star Wars comics, typically split into smaller segments and published over a number of issues. As such, the UK adaptation of the first movie stretched across 12 issues, whereas the American adaptation was over six issues. Covers for the Star Wars Weekly adaptation featured eight covers that were exclusive to the UK market while the remainder were repurposed from the American releases. Offered here is 11x16-3/8" artboard w/pen and ink original art for one of the UK exclusive covers, published as the cover of Star Wars Weekly #7 March 22, 1978. Art is by Gil Kane (1926-2000) w/inks by Tony DeZuniga (1932-2012) and shows the pivotal film scene where Luke Skywalker and Han Solo (both in Stormtrooper armor) are trapped in the Death Star garbage compactor along w/Princess Leia and Chewbacca. Han rushes to Luke's aid, as the tentacles of the Dianoga monster ensnare him. Top margin has printed "British Book" along w/"SW" title abbreviation and "4p. 1-8" blue pencil notation. Upper right has printer job stamp w/initials of Kane and DeZuniga. 1x2.5" strip of surface paper lifting to center of top margin, removing some printed artboard text, but not affecting art. Title and Marvel publishing indicia (as well as story title at lower left) are pasted stats. Back has Marvel copyright stamp. Margins have some scattered editorial notes and scattered staining, w/fingerprint infringing slightly into art at lower right. Art is o/w clean and VF. Fresh to market, this is the only cover art from a Marvel UK adaptation issue to come to auction. This piece (and other Star Wars original art offered in this auction) comes from one collector, and each is an incredible find.
