Item Description
12.75x19-7/8" artboard has gouache and wash original art for page 26 of Marvels #4, a limited series event published by Marvel April 1994. Written by Kurt Busiek and illustrated by popular comic artist Alex Ross, Marvels proved to be a career-defining work for Ross, and his distinctive, realistic style is on full display here. Page features three panels and is dominated by a large splash panel showing the Sub-Mariner's Atlantean landing force (featuring a mechanical crab walker and flying fish airships among other nautically-themed vessels) advancing through New York City, the Flatiron Building clearly depicted. This scene is witnessed by Marvels main character photojournalist Phil Sheldon, who walks with Gwen Stacy as they discuss her recently deceased father and her thoughts on Spider-Man. Not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, Sheldon brings his camera up to capture the awe-inspiring moment as Gwen stares on in wonder as the water droplets falling from the sky capture the sunlight, creating areas of rainbow-colored light. Of particular note, Ross couldn't resist indulging his love of inserting cameos by adding Watchmen characters Nite Owl and Silk Spectre inside one Atlantean ship (which itself bears a very strong resemblance to Nite Owl's ship Archimedes, aka the Owlship). Both Sheldon and Gwen Stacy appear together in splash and last panel; Sheldon appears in all three panels. Ross has signed at bottom. just left of Sheldon's image. Artboard has been mounted to glossy laminate sheet and has some typical lt. rippling with some margin aging. Image area remains bright, clean and Exc. Alex Ross original Marvels art is highly sought after and much coveted by collectors. This is a top tier Ross original, and an amazing example of his iconic art.
