Item Description
11x15.5" promotional newspaper issued as a Macy's store giveaway during their 1940 Macy's Superman Adventure promotion. Newspaper has four pages and is designed to look like a copy of the "Daily Planet," the newspaper Superman's alter ego Clark Kent works at. Noted as "Vol. 1 No. 1" w/"R.H. Macy & Company - Herald Square N.Y." text below name of paper (Perry White is also noted as "Editor" at top). This is the only such promotional issue published. Front page is dominated by large "Superman Saves Boys And Girls" headline, w/image of Superman saving boy and girl in the "Subterranean Caverns." The following article is "written" by Lois Lane, in which she refers to Superman as "The Man Of Tomorrow" and "The Man Of Steel." Additional articles mention the Superman balloon in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade, noting it as "The Largest Balloon Figure In The World." A photo shows "Superboy And Supergirl Of The New York World's Fair," winners of a Macy's -sponsored Superman Day at the 1940 NYWF. Other articles note Superman's upcoming appearance in a series of cartoons (Fleischer Studios, though not named) as well as The Man of Steel's continuing adventures on the Superman radio show. Newspaper features ads for various Superman products, including the Ideal Superman doll, Milton Bradley's rare The Adventures Of Superman game, Superman movie viewer, the rare A.S. Fishbach Superman playsuit and Daisy products Superman Krypto-Raygun and Cinematic Picture Pistol (here called "Superman Peep-Gun"). Horizontal fold as issued, w/small split at center left and .75" split at right. Newspaper has even moderate aging w/some brittleness to edges/corner. Despite being printed on fragile newsprint 85 years ago, newspaper shows just some scattered handling wear and tiny corner tip wear aside from the mention fold issues. Fine overall. Very rare and one of only two examples known to exist and the first we've offered in our 58 years. Book example from The Adventures of Superman Collection by Harry Matetsky. Danny Fuchs Collection.
