Item Description
14x22" cardboard window card. Promoting a "Big Brother And The Holding Company Featuring Janis Joplin" concert put on by the "Penn State Jazz Club" at Rec Hall on Oct. 18. This original 1968 pre-show produced poster was printed in extremely limited numbers for use only on campus and was later signed (in the 1990s) by Big Brother members Sam Andrews, James Gurley, Peter Albin and Dave Getez in felt tip marker. So limited was the printing and distribution that only one other example of this poster is known to have survived, and the current offering marks the first time either example has been offered publicly. Single pin hole in top r/l corners, top/bottom center and bottom left corner. Horizontal stress bend at center, scattered spotting at bottom left and general age. Verso has splatter stain at bottom, six tape pulls and one tape remnant- none of which affect front view. Technically VG but displaying above grade. Signatures come with REAL Roger Epperson LOA. This 1968 tour playing behind the success of Cheap Thrills is perhaps Joplin and BB's artistic and cultural peak. The album, released in Aug., spent eight weeks at #1 on the Billboard charts and the single "Piece of my Heart" became a touchstone of the era.

Though the stated start time was 8:30 the band was late and as 9:00pm approached the crowd had begun to get rowdy. Jazz Club members had to act and located audience members including David Fox who played in a band "The New Old-Time Wooley Thumpers" enlisting them to retrieve their equipment and return to open the show. As Fox recalls in a blog post on his website- "We hustled out of the building to the car we'd arrived in, made the circuit to each of our apartments, loaded up our equipment, and made it back to Rec Hall in record time... We performed about half a dozen songs with the crowd in, maybe, the front third of the hall paying attention and applauding, and those in the far reaches continuing to talk and wait impatiently... Finally, around 10:00, we got the signal that Janis and the band had arrived." For the next two hours Janis wowed the 6,000 capacity crowd of Nittany Lions in between sips of her trademark bottle of Southern Comfort. This show was part of Joplin's final run with Big Brother, as this tour swung back to the West Coast and the group made their final appearances together at the Avalon Ballroom in SF, CA on Dec. 1, 1968. On this night in State College, PA the 6,000 capacity Rec Hall was filled with Nittany Lions who were treated to an unforgettable concert by one of the greatest singers of a generation.
