Item Description
17.5x21.5" hardcover library volume collects issues of Missouri newspapers from Aug. 1-31, 1938. Headlines of note include increasing Japanese aggression, obituary for Warner Oland (Charlie Chan of film) with picture, Jackie Coogan trial over child earnings and Mickey Rooney story. Comics include Toonerville Folks, Popeye, Big Chief Wahoo, Li'l Abner, Skippy, Blondie, Ripley's Believe It Or Not as well as full-color Sundays featuring Flash Gordon, The Newlyweds and Henry. This section is smaller than the rest of the daily news sections, resulting in pages remaining VF. Great editorial cartoon featuring Hitler and Mussolini. Photos depict Hitler, Basil Rathbone, Charles Lindbergh, Errol Flynn, Charlie McCarthy, Sabu, former Kaiser Wilhelm II, Queen Elizabeth (the future Queen Mother), Shirley Temple, FDR and Nazi official Hermann Goering. Advertising of note includes ads for Rice Krispies, Charlie McCarthy radio program, Dionne Quintuplets dolls, Alphonse & Gaston Kellogg's ad as well as ads for Falstaff beer, Pepsi and Kodak. A few scattered large tears mostly to glossy "Rotogravure" sections. Light edge and corner tip wear. Fine overall. Front cover also has library label.
